Winter Depression

Winter Depression

winter depressionClimate changes seem to affect many people and they just can’t understand why they tend to feel gloomy and miserable. This mood disorder is called winter depression, or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) which occurs during the months of November to February.

Climate Changes

During the months of November to February, the days start getting shorter and colder, and the nights longer and darker. Climate changes seem to affect many people and they just can’t understand why they tend to feel gloomy and miserable. This mood disorder is called winter depression, or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

Norman E. Rosenthal

According to Norman E. Rosenthal, the doctor who coined the term SAD in 1984, winter depression has a sound medical basis that involves changes in the body’s mood centers brought on by shorter daylight hours and a lack of sunlight. Most depressive illness sufferers experience a sense of utter isolation and loneliness. But the fact that many people go through the same grumpiness during this time of the year provides a sense of comfort and assurance that they are not alone. As the cliche goes, misery loves company.

Statistics

Based on statistics of SAD Association, 500,000 people in the United Kingdom experience some form of winter depression, while doctors have estimated that 20% of the population, or almost 2 million people, are affected in Sweden by this condition.

Light Therapy

One of the most effective and clinically proven treatment for SAD is Light Therapy, which has been shown to benefit some 80-85 percent of SAD cases. Simple as it may sound, the treatment actually involves more than just turning on a light and sitting beside it while twiddling your thumbs as you wait for that renewed energy to power up your whole well-being.
The average domestic or office light emits a paltry 200-500 lux (a lux is a unit of illuminance,) whereas a minimum of 2,500 lux is required to alleviate the symptoms of SAD. In comparison, a clear summer’s day can reach an intensity of 100,000 lux.

Based on these specs, a number of specially designed light boxes have been invented that emit precisely the right amount of illumination. Symptoms of SAD gradually subside by sitting in front of one for about 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the severity of the condition.

Light therapy may be the best treatment for SAD as far as symptoms are concerned. However, addressing the root causes of the condition may involve both anti-depressant drugs and psychotherapy treatments especially for those with severe symptoms.

Geography and Well Being

Studies have shown that the incidence of SAD increases dramatically as you go 30 degrees of latitude further north or south, as the condition is virtually unheard of in the tropical countries. A movement or vacation trip to these countries in the equator may sound impractical but can definitely improve ones mood and well-being.

Watching movies that feature warm, sunny, summery climates show demonstrable improvements in mood. Research shows that any film with clear blue cloudless skies, palm trees and an absence of snow should qualify for a movie therapy.

The same mood-enhancing effect may result by simply watching outdoor sports like cricket or golf. However, over-exposure to snooker, darts, and indoor bowling has been found to bring on a state of depressive, trance-like catatonia that, in severe cases, culminates in complete mental health breakdown.

Good Luck!

Should You Become a Storm Chaser

Should You Become a Storm Chaser?

Do you have a love for the weather?

severe weatherDo you consider yourself to be a weather fanatic or a weather enthusiast? If you regularly find yourself tracking the forecasted weather or if you find yourself outdoors when severe weather strikes, you may want to consider becoming a storm chaser. Many individuals storm chase as a hobby, as well as for a career.

As nice as it is to hear that you can make a living or enjoy a fun hobby with storm chasing, you may be looking for more information. For starters, storm chasing is defined as the pursuit of bad or severe weather. Storm chasers often hop in their vehicles and follow severe weather. As nice and as exciting as this sounds, storm chasing is a lot different than watching severe weather unfold from the safety and comfort of your own home.

Career Opportunity or Hobby

Before deciding that storm chasing is the perfect career opportunity or hobby for you, there are a number of important points that you will want to take into consideration. Storm chasing often involves a lot of knowledge and research. Storm chasers rely on their knowledge of the weather, as well as severe weather alerts, and radar images to be in the right place at the right time. When it comes to the weather, do you simply just like to watch it? Would you mind sitting around examining radar images or listening to weather alerts on the radio? Although storm chasing can be exciting, it takes research, hard work, and determination to be a successful storm chaser.

 Is it Right For You

Another one of the many points that you will want to take into consideration, when trying to determine if storm chasing is right for you, is your ability to quickly think on your feet. Are you good at problem solving under pressure? If you are not, storm chasing may not be for you. As exciting as storm chasing can be, it is also important to remember the dangers that surround it. When tracking super cell thunderstorms hoping to find a tornado, you may find yourself trapped. If you ever found yourself in this type of situation, you will need to not panic, but quickly think of a solution that will get you to safety and fast.

Can You do Technology and Research

As previously stated, many professional storm chasers rely on technology and research to get them right in the middle of severe weather. Do you have the capability to do so? Storm chasing involves more than hoping in a vehicle. Do you have a television or a computer in your vehicle that you can use to access up-to-date radar images? Do you have a weather radio that will provide you with constant updates in severe weather? If not, you may want to refrain from storm chasing until you have these important tools. These weather devices will not only help to improve your chances of seeing success, but they can also help to keep you safe.

 Solo Storm Chaser

Although it is more than possible to become a solo storm chaser, it is important to know the risks and dangers associated with doing so. Storm chasers are more likely to be successful when they have a partner or even multiple partners. Professional storm chasers often have a driver, one team member who monitors the weather radio or satellite images, as well as another team member who acts as a lookout. In addition to seeing success, having another team member is likely to lessen your risk of injury, as a second or even a third set of eyes is always helpful in severe, unpredictable weather.

Summary

As outlined above, there is a lot more to storm chasing than simply hopping in your car and hitting the gas pedal. Even if you are only interested in becoming a storm chaser for personal hobby reasons, as opposed to becoming a professional storm chaser, you will still want to proceed with caution. Knowing what actions you should take and what situations you can expect to face as a storm chaser is one of the best ways to see success, as well as stay safe.

How You Can Learn More About the Weather

How You Can Learn More About the Weather

How You Can Learn More About the Weather

weatherDo you enjoy watching the weather outdoors or do you enjoy tracking it? If you do, you may be looking for more information on weather. What is nice is that you have an unlimited number of options. There are a number of different ways that you can go about learning the impact the weather has on the environment, what causes the weather to constantly change, and so much more. In fact, you can even find tips on how to help you better track the weather at home, like your local rainfall totals.

As nice as it is to hear that there is a lot of information out there for you, concerning the weather, you may be wondering where this information is located. As previously stated, you have a number of different options. One of those options should involve the internet. In fact, when using the internet there are a number of different approaches that you can take to find updated weather related information online.

For starters, if you are looking for information on your current local weather, your extended weather forecast, or if you would like to see updated radar images of your area, you may want to visit the online websites of your local news stations. There are also a number of national news and weather agencies, such as The Weather Channel, that have this same information available online. Often times you will find that local weather information is updated to the minute or at least every ten or fifteen minutes. You should easily be able to find these websites by performing a standard internet search.

In addition to finding up-to-date information on your local weather, you can also find information on a number of other important weather related topics. For example, if you like to track the weather from your home, such as the wind direction, wind speed, or rainfall totals, you may want to find helpful weather tracking tips that can help you more accurately track the weather from your home. These types of websites are ones that are often run by professional meteorologists or long-term weather enthusiasts. These websites may contain graphs, descriptions, as well as videos. To find these types of weather related websites, perform a standard internet search.

Although the internet is one of the easiest ways to research weather and other weather related topics, it is important to remember that it isnít your only option. You may also want to turn to the television or documentary videos. For starters, The Weather Channel was mentioned above. This national channel often has specials, such as ones that cover the greatest moments in the history of weather, and so forth. You may be able to learn a lot from these types of programs, which can also be found on other television stations as well. If you are curious about global warming and the impact that it may have on our environment, you may want rent or buy a documentary covering the subject, such as Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth.

The above mentioned ways are just a few of the many ways that you can learn more about the weather. Additional ideas involve visiting your local library or bookstore to examine the weather related books that are available. You may also want to subscribe to a science magazine or journal, especially one that covers weather related issues.

Good Luck!

The Virtual Weather Station

The Virtual Weather Station

A sensor-free or virtual home weather station is becoming an attractive option for those with the weather bug. The two main options are a PC-based program or a standalone weather station receiving signals from a service.

Weather instruments set up around the home do create the satisfaction of tracking your own backyard micro-climate. Though some never make it out of the box due to the set up and prep work needed to get accurate readings. Something as simple as a hungry squirrel chewing through wires can also put a quick end to your weather project.

Companies like Weather Undergound and WeatherBug have large networks of local weather stations that can be accessed via the Internet. Web pages and downloadable applications make your PC simulate a live weather station. Through advances in website design, dials move to current readings right before your eyes. The ability to view past data helps the user recognize patterns and make weather forecasts.

By tapping into services like MSN Direct, standalone weather stations can provide current weather conditions without any additional sensors. Weather readings are updated every two minutes and include wind, rain, chance of rain, temperature and humidity. NWS warnings are also carried.

Proximity to the receiving weather instruments is key to the quality of weather station options. If a weather service maintains instruments nearby, the virtual station becomes almost identical to having your own instruments. If a weather service has stations that are far away or in a different micro-climate, readings can be very different from current weather conditions.

The thrill of tracking a storm in real time is possible without the expense and care of your own sensors. The options available for home weather stations leave much room for personal preference, aptitude, and enjoyment.

Extreme Weather Patterns in Europe to Continue

Have you noticed the severe weather pattern changes in some parts of Europe of late, where some countries, in particular England, recently experienced severe problems as a consequence of extreme weather patterns. While heavy snowfall and icy conditions made people aware that there are currently different weather conditions at play, did you notice anything else?

What do these severe weather pattern changes, which have caused so much havoc in some parts of Western Europe, mean other than inconvenience for some and having some extra fun with snow for others?

What does it do for bird and animal life? How severely were they affected?

What do these severe weather pattern changes mean for those that are trying to predict weather patterns such as a weatherman? Perhaps for some that they may no longer be in a position to adequately predict the weather in such regions.

It is unfortunate that most people are no yet aware that these weather extremes have begun happening more often. The year 2008 was marked by severe weather extremes in many parts of the world. More details about this can be found on the World Meteorological Organization’s website

Once these extreme conditions subside most people forget that there has been a severe disruption of normal weather patterns and don’t give it any further thought.

In essence, have YOU asked yourself how your future may be affected by these extreme weather patterns? Could these changing weather patterns affect you more than it has until now? Are there worsening conditioning on the way?

Up till now, very few people would consider moving house as most find it hard to belief these extreme weather patterns will continue and that they could begin to be severely affected by it. However, what if in the near future this is no longer so?

What if there will be major weather pattern changes on an ongoing basis, which are just beginning to affect more and more parts of the world?

What if the stresses placed on infrastructure, due to these weather extremes, could begin to play a very important role in future planning?

What if climate change itself is no longer preventable?

What if we are moving towards a very unstable weather pattern, the beginning of which we are already seeing happening?

Could the weather already have begun this cycle of instability and we have not noticed it? Often these extreme weather patterns are dismissed as simply an act of nature, with the thought that “these things sometimes happen”.

Why are most people not more vigilant and thinking about where we are heading under present weather conditions? Why is there a lack of care in resolving our own pollution issues?

Life in the sense of how we know it will soon change, as most people will no longer find these coming changes comforting.

These predictions I am sharing in this article are not to be dismissed as this will begin to show itself within the next two years.

Advancement In Local Weather Radar Reports

Throughout history, many lives have been lost at the hands of severe weather. Meteorologists and scientists alike are always investigating new ways to increase the warning time for these storms, with the hope of reducing the loss of life. In the past few decades, local weather radar advancements have been made, which allow for better accuracy in predicting the paths of these storms, thus allowing meteorologists to issue severe weather reports and warnings earlier than in previous years.

Meteorologists and scientists have been able to successfully track severe thunderstorms and possible tornadoes by using an advanced tracking system called NEXRAD (Next-Generation Radar). NEXRAD is a tracking network made up of 158 Doppler weather radars. This high-resolution computerized system takes readings on the amount of precipitation in the air, the movements in the clouds, and the wind speeds during a storm.

These readings are bounced back to a local weather computer, and a colorful image is rendered on the screen, giving meteorologists a clear picture of what kind of weather is on the horizon. This final image is what you see when the meteorologist breaks in with severe weather reports and warnings, usually with a description of how he maps weather radar.

In the case of severe weather, the meteorologist will relay the readings found by the local weather radar to the residents in the area. Most likely, on your television screen you will see a computer animated image of the approaching storm.

If the storm is severe enough, then the National Weather Service (NWS) will issue severe weather reports of severe thunderstorm warnings for your area. In that case, the storm captured on radar will have produced strong readable winds, detectable lightening, and some hail. Paying attention to the weather map is vital when severe weather is around.

On the television screen you will see several colors on the precipitation map, ranging from blue (the lightest) to black (the heaviest). If the colors for your specific area are yellow, take caution. If the colors range between orange and red, take cover immediately, as damaging winds and dangerous lightening have been reported.

When local weather radar in Atlanta, Georgia reported high winds, circular wind patterns, and large hail earlier this year, the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning. Meteorologists in the area used the collected data to predict what path the storm would take, indicating which areas needed to be warned.

Thanks to this technology, most residents received the severe weather reports early enough to allow time to seek shelter before the storm hit. Paying attention to your local weather source during severe weather plays a vital role in your safety.

Copper Weather Vanes – They Tell What’s Blowin’ In The Wind

With the dawn of space age satellites, weather channels and the Internet, it’s hard to believe there was a time when the only way to predict the weather was to look outside.

For eons, this has been the case. From earliest Mesopotamia until the beginning of the space race, professional and amateur forecasters alike had to rely on more primitive ways to tell the weather.

Barometers and thermometers did a yeoman’s job, but they couldn’t tell you which way the wind was blowing. And as Bob Dylan once sang, “the answer my friend, is blowin’ in the wind.”

Of course, Bob wasn’t talking about the weather, but he could have been. With the wind comes the weather, whether you’re wondering if a nor’easter is coming in from the Atlantic, a hurricane from the Caribbean, or the Santa Ana’s on the California coastline.

Even today, copper weather vanes continue to be one of the best ways to predict whether the weather is going to take a turn for the better or worse. Copper weather vanes predate their popularity in Europe. In fact, they were first mentioned in ancient Mesopotamia more than 3,500 years ago.

Copper weather vanes can do one thing a weatherman can’t. They can tell you what the wind is doing in your own yard. They are one of those low tech, ingenious inventions that are not only functional, but beautiful as well.

Mounted on the highest point of any structure, copper weather vanes need a clear space for the wind to blow by it. You don’t have to go crazy, like the folks along White Lake in Michigan who erected a 48-foot vane. But you do want to get your copper weather vane up there in the open.

Copper weather vanes come in an endless array of styles and sizes. Some are adorned with ornamentations such as roosters, whales or ships. Still others are decorated with more modern themes, including Harleys. Today’s weather vane is as much a statement about you and your interests as it is about being a weather indicator.

Of course, few people use copper weather vanes to tell the weather any more. The Weather Channel has pretty much sealed its fate. But it still makes a great addition to your home. Copper weather vanes create a focal point on the exterior of your home. The vane constantly shifting in the wind draws the eye to that part of your house. As such, you want to mount it with this in mind.

If you want to purchase antique copper weather vanes for your home, be prepared to bring a lot of money with you. The golden age of weather vanes occurred during the late 1800s. Copper weather vanes from this period can sell for anywhere between $ 50,000 and $ 750,000 at auction.

While the thought of spending that much may leave you a bit winded, it clearly shows America’s love affair with copper weather vanes, both new and old. It is a classic piece of Americana whose roots go back to the beginning of civilization in the plains of Mesopotamia.

Use A Wireless Weather Station To Get Your Forecasts

Ever been annoyed that the general weather forecast for your region does not reflect the actual weather at your place? Where do they get this stuff from, you wonder? The weather forecast indicated definite rain yesterday, but did it materialise? No way, Jose, not at my place! You’ve often wondered where exactly they measure the weather data (max/min temperature, rainfall etc.) when reporting for your city, because it seems to differ so markedly from what you experience. We all know that weather forecasting will never be an exact science, but why do they seem to get it wrong so often? Sometimes, to err on the side of caution, they will also provide a heavy weather warning when really, there is no rhyme or reason. That only leads to credibility problems and us doubting the forecasts in future.

We all know that weather can be highly variable across a forecast region. Showers might be forecast as a probability and, of course, if it’s a high probability one expects it to happen, which is often not the case. It must be quite a dilemma as to what data to convey to the media to present their weather forecasts, because they have to distil the information into a few minutes’ presentation, thus leaving us somewhat short of local specifics.

Another issue is the matter of weather statistics – what I want to know is what was the max/min temperature at my place yesterday, or wind speed during a storm, or rainfall over the past day or week etc. I’m really interested from time to time to look back over the past month or year and compare the data with that of the last year, or that of the same month in the previous year.

The solution that I’ve found really useful is to have a wireless weather station for home use. Instead of therefore having general data, I have data specific to the micro climate in my area. I can review and compare my data after major weather events and find that most interesting not only for myself, but as a conversation topic with friends and family.

Home weather stations vary in terms of features, with the simplest units mostly measuring just temperature and relative humidity, but more sophisticated home weather stations can measure the above plus rainfall and wind speed/direction as well. Some models connect to PC with special software supplied, so that data can be stored and graphed for later review.

As someone interested in the weather and its behaviour (and at my place in particular), I highly recommend you consider a wireless weather station.
